Breast Cancer and the Importance of Genetic Testing

Genetic testing for breast cancer is relatively new, but has become one of the most important factors in in determining the risk for breast cancer in women and its likelihood to reoccur. This is especially true for women with a family history of breast cancer or those who may not know their full family history.

According to Cesar Santa-Maria, MD, Northwestern Medicine oncologist and member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, genetic testing and counseling can be critical when treating and screening for breast cancer.
