Ben Stiller and Dr. Edward Schaeffer being interviewed on the Today ShowEdward M. Schaeffer, MD, PhD, chair of urology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, appeared on the Today Show* this morning alongside actor Ben Stiller to discuss the topic of prostate cancer with Matt Lauer. Dr. Schaeffer performed Stiller’s prostate cancer surgery in 2014.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death in men in the United States. Approximately 85 percent of prostate cancers are detected by simple blood work.

“We recommend active treatment for men,” said Dr. Schaeffer. “The best and most important step for individual men is to discuss rather or not they should get testing for prostate cancer with their doctor. It’s a personal decision.”
