“Dr. Rao’s commitment to professional excellence, mentorship of future leaders, research, education and advancement of the field are among the many reasons he was selected as one of this year’s awardees,” said Bruce M. Gans, MD, AMRPA Board Chair.
“I consider winning this leadership award from AMRPA a great honor and privilege, which I could not have received without the help and support from Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital associates. Their approach of caring with spirit and teamwork was instrumental in this accolade,” said Dr. Rao.
Dr. Rao joined Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinics in 1983 and continues to practice today. During his Marianjoy tenure, he has served in a variety of positions: Medical Director Brain Injury; Medical Director Neuromuscular; Vice President of Medical Affairs (CMO); and Residency Director. He continues to pursue teaching and research, and his academic oversight of over 350 physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians has had a far-reaching effect across the US, as his students have assumed positions in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and leadership roles across the country.
Dr. Rao has conducted research studies and published 38 peer-reviewed journal articles on topics related to brain injury, stroke, gait, orthotics and swallowing. He has lectured at numerous national and local professional conferences on many of these topics.
He has also secured nearly $1.5 million in funding for his clinical research, which continues today on topics such as a “Comparative Study – Anterior vs. Posterior Hip Arthroplasty.”
Dr. Rao has received numerous other recognitions including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s Distinguished Clinician Award in 2008.
