Huntington's Disease Society of America Center of Excellence logoNorthwestern Medicine Huntington’s Disease Clinic recently received designation by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) as an HDSA Center of Excellence for 2017.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital
is one of only two designated Centers of Excellence in the Chicago area. Northwestern Memorial has received this prestigious award for their exemplary commitment to bringing comprehensive care to those suffering from Huntington’s disease as well as their families.

Danny Bega, MD,
a neurologist and clinical director of the Huntington’s disease clinic says the designation helps to support the hospital's clinical care by providing more support to the patients and families they serve.

“This designation gives us the opportunity to focus on research, treatment, patient education and advocacy for patients and caregivers affected by Huntington’s disease,” said Bega. “It’s thrilling to see that a little over a year ago we started this clinic with a handful of patients and now it has grown as one of the premier institutions for Huntington’s disease in the Chicago area.”

The hospital was awarded $15,000 which will go towards promoting high quality of care and support staff for patients with Huntington’s disease.

Northwestern Memorial is one of only 41 Huntington’s disease care facilities from across the country to receive the Centers of Excellence designation. Visit the HDSA website* for the full list of centers.

The Huntington disease clinic at Northwestern Memorial launched in May of 2015 and is supported by Dimitri Krainc, MD, PhD, Aaron Montgomery Ward Professor and chair of The Ken & Ruth Davee Department of Neurology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Krainc has helped to lead the department in finding key molecular pathways which would help to develop therapies for Huntington's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The multidisciplinary clinic, dedicated to research and comprehensive treatment for patients battling Huntington’s disease, provides a collaboration of specialists including neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists, genetic counselor and social workers, as well as neurology nurses and a rehabilitation therapy team. Northwestern Memorial also offers the only “at risk,” or “presymptomatic” support group in the area for people with a family history of Huntington’s disease. Learn more here.
