On Wednesday, September 22, representatives from Northwestern Medicine International Health met with President Nguyen Xuan Phuc of Vietnam at the United Nations in New York. President Phuc recognized Northwestern Medicine for its donation of medical equipment and supplies to support Vietnam’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Daniel Derman, MD, senior vice president of administration for Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, and Jessica Morrissey, managing director of International Relations for Northwestern Medicine, met with President Phuc during the 76th Annual United Nations General Assembly. During the meeting, the Northwestern Medicine representatives presented President Phuc with some of the donated items and expressed a commitment to support the country in expanding access to high-quality health care for its citizens.

“We are honored for the opportunity to meet with President Phuc, especially in a location as significant as the United Nations. We look forward to a continued relationship between Northwestern Medicine and Vietnam,” said Dr. Derman. “As COVID-19 continues to impact people around the world, we must reach across borders and offer support to other nations when possible so that we can all succeed in our shared goal of ending this global pandemic.”

Vietnam initially led the world in its management of COVID-19, but the delta variant has severely impacted the country and overwhelmed its hospitals, particularly in highly populated areas such as Ho Chi Minh City. To help Vietnam in its fight against the virus, Northwestern Medicine donated equipment including breathing systems, CO2 monitors, breathing nebulizers and many other crucial supplies needed to care for patients with COVID-19.
