‘Tis the season for giving and on Saturday, November 10, sixteen members of Northwestern Memorial Hospital
’s Medical Explorers program gave of their time to volunteer at the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents (SOAR) Artisan Market. The Medical Explorers program offers Chicago-area teens an early look at careers in healthcare.
During the market, which showcased arts and crafts, jewelry, photographic prints and children’s clothes from local businesses, the teens greeted and welcomed vendors and assisted exhibitors with booth set-up.
For Explorer Antione Lane, the experience was enjoyable and he looks forward to the next volunteer opportunity. “I believe the group as a whole enjoyed volunteering with SOAR. It was very fun to help all of the vendors out and it brought the Medical Explorers closer as a family,” Lane said. “It was also very interesting to see the unique and different items the vendors prepared.”
The Medical Explorers are selected from a number of applicants and are offered a unique, hands-on opportunity that exposes them to a variety of career paths including physicians, nurses and pharmacists, as well as careers in healthcare business administration, financial management, health law and biomedical engineering. In addition to career exposure, the program emphasizes life skills, service learning, character development and leadership.
