Today, Friday, Aug. 22, state and local dignitaries representing Illinois and Lake County joined Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital at the groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new hospital, which is slated to open 2017. More than 300 people attended the ceremony, including Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), Congressman Bradley Scott Schneider (D-IL) and Lake Forest Mayor Donald P. Schoenheider among several others.

Thomas McAfee, President, Lake Forest Hospital, opened the ceremony with resounding thanks for the amount of support and community partnership that brought the project to fruition. Approved by the city in 2012, the plan identifies three distinct zones of development: Health and wellness to the north, Northwestern Medicine's new Lake Forest Hospital in the center, and education and research to the south. In totality it is valued at an estimated $378 million, which represents one of the largest construction projects in Lake County.

The thoughtful design of the 160-acre campus integrates medical care with health and wellness through walking and biking trails as well as a new common area for community activity and enjoyment. The first phase of the project will be the development of the new healthcare facility. The new hospital will contain:

  • 114 private inpatient beds
  • 72 outpatient care spaces
  • Eight operating rooms
  • 483,500 square feet of new construction

The redesigned 160-acre campus will include:

  • 116 acres of open space
  • More than 7,000 feet of pedestrian and bicycle paths

The new Lake Forest Hospital will be a destination for health, wellness and civic enjoyment. The new state-of-the-art campus will provide patients with access to quality care, medical experts and exceptional service as well as a seamless pathway to Northwestern Medicine specialty care.
