Northwestern Medicine Provides Care to Athletes at Big 10 Tournament
By Megan McCannNews March 14, 2013
Northwestern Medicine is providing care to the teams playing in the Big 10 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the United Center, March 14 to 17, as well as at the Big 10 Women’s Tournament that took place at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates last weekend. The emergency department and the department of orthopaedic surgery have both dedicated faculty and residents to care for the athletes in collaboration with Athletico. George Chiampas, DO, emergency medicine specialist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and assistant professor in emergency medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and Michael Schafer, MD, orthopaedic surgeon at Northwestern Memorial and professor in orthopaedic surgery at the Feinberg School, coordinated the care for the tournaments.
Caring for elite athletes is a common occurrence for Northwestern's sports medicine experts, with many serving as team physicians for collegiate and professional teams including Northwestern University Athletics, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Blackhawks.
