For those living with migraines and headaches, the unbearable throbbing pain can be excruciating and affect quality of life. At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the department of neurology has launched the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Headache Center to help those needing headache and migraine relief.

“We felt there was an unmet need for headache sufferers and wanted to provide a personalized and therapeutic approach for those with the condition,” said Katherine S. Carroll, MD,medical director for the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Headache Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “Often times, patients resort to the emergency room which can be costly and time consuming. We want to alleviate that burden and provide a more patient centric approach for migraine and headache relief.”

Patients experiencing headaches, tension headaches, cluster headaches and migraines can see a board-certified neurologist or provider who specializes in headaches to better understand and assess “triggers” and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

In collaboration with the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and the Northwestern Medicine pain management team, patients have access to a multitude of pain relief options including:
• Acupuncture
• Botox
• Chiropractic care
• Outpatient infusion therapy
• Massage therapy
• Neuropsychological support
• Nutrition services
• Pain management injections
• Physical therapy
• Sleep medicine referrals

Migraines affect more than 40 million Americans in the United States and women suffer three times as often as men according to the Migraine Research Foundation*. More importantly, migraines can be costly. Every 10 seconds, someone in the U.S. admits themselves into the emergency room complaining of headache pain.

For more information or to make an appointment, visit Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Headache Center or call 312.695.7950. For migraine emergencies, patients who have already established care with a Northwestern Medicine neurologist will receive priority appointments within 24-48 hours but are highly encouraged to call before noon.
