Stephen B. Hanauer, MD, FACG Presented with Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award

Stephen B. Hanauer, MD, FACG, Medical Director of the Northwestern Medicine Digestive Health Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Clifford J. Barborka Professor - Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, has been awarded the Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award by the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). Dr. Hanauer received this prestigious award at the ACG Leadership Dinner in Philadelphia earlier this month.

The Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award, formerly the ACG Clinical Achievement Award, is presented to one Member/Fellow of the College per year in recognition of distinguished contributions to clinical gastroenterology over a significant period of time. In addition to having cultivated a career of distinguished clinical practice of gastroenterology, candidates for this award must demonstrate contributions in patient care, clinical science, clinical education, technological innovation, and public and community service.

Dr. Hanauer was well positioned to earn the Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award, due to his numerous contributions to the gastroenterology subspecialty as a clinical physician, researcher, teacher, and innovator. He served as the President of ACG from 2014 to 2015, as Chair of the ACG’s Finance & Budget Committee, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. Additionally, Dr. Hanauer was a member of the Credentials Committee, Publications Committee, and Research Committee. In 1999, Dr. Hanauer delivered the David Sun Lecture at the ACG Postgraduate Course.

As part of his significant additions to clinical research in the area of gastroenterology, Dr. Hanauer spearheaded and supported groundbreaking clinical studies for IBD-related treatments. He is highly regarded in the field of gastroenterology, and is valued as a consensus leader and counselor by many colleagues who have benefited from his mentorship.

“It is an incredible honor to be recognized by my peers for my clinical research and, most important, for the care I provide to my patients,” commented Dr. Hanauer.

By receiving the Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award, Dr. Hanauer earns much-deserved recognition of his dedication to patients, students, and colleagues alike. Other accolades include the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) Scientific Achievement Award for Clinical Research in 2011, the Inspirational Physician Award from American Medical Association (AMA) in 2014, and being listed the Castle Connolly Top Doctors American Registry since 2005.

Specific criteria include: a career of distinguished clinical practice in gastroenterology and contributions in patient care, clinical science, clinical education, technological innovation, and public and community service.
