Lake Forest Hospital June 13, 2006
LAKE FOREST, IL – The Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital Women’s Auxiliary today announced this year’s recipients of its health career scholarships. A $5,000 Marion Warner Hodgkins Scholarship was awarded along with 25 A.B. Dick Jr. scholarships, ranging from $500 to $2,000 each. The recipients are students pursuing health-care careers or professionals continuing their education in a health-care field. They’re selected on the basis of such criteria as outstanding academic achievement and exceptional promise in the field of health care.
This year’s Marion Warner Hodgkins Scholarship winner is Beth Simpson, RN, BSN, CAPA, a clinical educator at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, where she has worked the past 12 years. Simpson, of Wadsworth, co-chairs the hospital’s Pain Committee and is a member of its Policy and Procedures Committee. She’ll use the scholarship money to help pursue a master’s degree in nursing with a focus on education from the University of Phoenix online program, which she expects to complete in February 2007. Mary Brown, co-chair of the Women’s Auxiliary Board Health Careers Scholarship Committee, said Simpson has been described as a lifelong learner.
In expressing her gratitude for the “generous gift” she was awarded, Simpson said, “I’ve never gotten anything like this in my life before.”
Last years’ recipient, Nancy Slone, RN, spoke at the June 13 presentation and encouraged all the scholarship winners to be “proud of health care and proud of what you’re doing.”
The $5,000 scholarship is named for the first president of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s Women’s Board, who also volunteered for more than 50 years at the hospital.
