LAKE FOREST, IL – Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital has announced that Ian Cohen, MD, has been named Medical Director of Cardiology. Cohen completed his cardiology training at the University of Chicago Hospitals, and has spent the last 18 years in the area doing research on diseases of the heart and seeing patients in Chicago medical centers. In addition to managing his general cardiology practice, Cohen is also an interventional cardiologist who performs complex catheter-based treatments, including angioplasty and stenting procedures, which have become the gold standard of care for cardiovascular disease.
“Dr. Cohen’s expertise in cardiology will significantly advance our goal of becoming the top rated heart care program in the region,” said Thomas J. McAfee, President of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. “We are excited to have him join our organization and to be able to offer his expertise and care to the residents of our communities.”
Cohen has developed cardiology programs at community hospitals based on state-of-the-art protocols of academic medical centers. The programs have included streamlining emergency care response times and increasing the effectiveness of heart disease treatments, particularly those focused on improved results for acute coronary syndromes.
As a member of the Northwestern Medicine prestigious Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Cohen’s goal is to bring new leadership to the Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital Cardiology Program. His focus will be to develop a seamless integration of care between the hospital’s services in Lake County and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The Heart and Heart Surgery Program at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute was ranked 14th in the nation in 2010 according to U.S. News & World Report. “Together Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have the most advanced technology and cardiac resources available, and Northwestern Medicine ranks as the most preferred institution for cardiology care in Chicago*,” said Cohen. “I want to collaborate with their team and replicate that program to make patient-centered and cutting-edge services convenient for patients here in the northern suburbs.”
Cohen will also work closely with Northwestern Memorial Hospital to expand Lake Forest Hospital's wellness and lifestyle programs for adults, aimed at educating the public on preventing heart disease and teaching heart disease patients how to live high-quality lives after diagnosis.
Cohen lives in the northern suburbs of Chicago with his wife and three children, ages 6, 11 and 14.
