Northwestern Memorial Ranks No. 1 in New U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Metro Ranking

Northwestern Memorial Hospital March 28, 2011

CHICAGO, IL – Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) has been ranked No.1 in Chicago in U.S. News & World Report's first-ever Best Hospitals metro area rankings, available online at U.S. News. To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties. Northwestern Memorial ranks No.1 as it is ranked in 12 of 16 adult specialties comprising the 2010 "America's Best Hospitals" listing and two specialties U.S. News refers to as "high-performing". Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital also made the list at No.28.

The 12 specialties within which NMH was nationally ranked in 2010 are as follows:
  • Neurology & Neurosurgery (#13)
  • Heart & Heart Surgery (#14)
  • Gynecology (#14)
  • Rheumatology (#16)
  • Gastroenterology (#22)
  • Orthopedics (#22)
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology (#23)
  • Urology (#26)
  • Cancer (#27)
  • Ear, Nose & Throat (#27)
  • Geriatrics (#27)
  • Kidney Disorders (#34)
The new rankings recognize 622 hospitals in or near major cities with a record of high performance in key medical specialties, including 132 of the 152 hospitals already identified as the best in the nation. There are nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide.

U.S. News created Best Hospitals more than 20 years ago to identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases, such as brain tumors typically considered inoperable and delicate pancreatic procedures. Northwestern Memorial has been included in that national ranking for well over a decade.

U.S. News says the new metro rankings are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked Best Hospital. It also hopes that patients and their families will have a far better chance of finding a U.S. News-ranked hospital in their health insurance network and might not have to travel to get care at a high-performing hospital.
