New Pulmonologists Join Staff of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital

LAKE FOREST, IL – “We are delighted to add Dr. Becker, Dr. Yavitz and Dr. Zinn-Batina to our pulmonology and critical care teams,” said Michael G. Ankin, MD, FACP, FCCP, a pulmonologist at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital and the hospital’s vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer. “These three physicians bring decades of experience in leading critical care teams to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s intensive care unit and will ensure top-quality care for our most vulnerable patients.”
Board certified in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and internal medicine, Frank S. Becker, MD has been practicing at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for 18 years. Becker will serve as director of Pulmonary and Critical Care services at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. In addition to his new role in Lake Forest, Becker remains an attending physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago with an office location in Chicago. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and is a consulting physician at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Becker received his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1986 and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. He completed his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Michigan Health System.
Becker has held previous faculty positions at the University of Michigan and at the University of Minnesota. He was an attending physician at the University of Minnesota Hospital, the University of Michigan Hospital, the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the VA Lakeside Medical Center. His peer-reviewed work has been published in scientific journals such as Chest, Medicine and Journal of Immunology.

Illan Yavitz, MD is a native of Uruguay and received his medical degree from the Universidad de la Republica in Uruguay in 1998. He completed an internship and residency in Hospital Maciel in Uruguay and completed another internship and residency at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. He completed his fellowship at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center also. He is board certified in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and internal medicine and is a fellow at the American College of Chest Physicians. He is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. “Lung disease is very prevalent in our communities today and can result in a variety of ailments from asthma to chronic bronchitis, sleep apnea and lung cancer,” said Dr. Yavitz. “Dr. Becker, Dr. Zinn-Batina and I are committed to treating each patient as an individual to pinpoint the diagnosis and provide a treatment plan that will lead to the healthiest life possible.”

Mary Zinn-Batina, MD received her medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in 1982. She completed her internship and residency at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and completed her fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Zinn-Batina has held previous positions at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Central DuPage Hospital and Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. She served on the medical staff of Lake Forest Hospital from 1987 to 1990, during which time she also served on the critical care committee. She was on the critical care committee at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and served as chair from 1996-2008. Dr. Zinn-Batina has been named as one of U.S. News’ and World Reports' best doctors. “I’m delighted to return to Lake Forest, where I began my career, and to join the outstanding pulmonology and critical care teams at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital,” said Zinn-Batina. “I am bringing my experience on the critical care teams at other area hospitals to Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital to ensure the highest quality of care is provided to our patients.”
