Palliative Care and Internal Medicine Specialist Joins Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital as Lead Physician of Palliative Care Services

Gordon Wood, MD, has joined the staff of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital as the Director of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care. Dr. Wood will lead the hospital’s partnership with Midwest Palliative CareCenter, which integrates top quality palliative care into the treatment of all patients who need it within the Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest system.

LAKE FOREST, IL – “Dr. Wood shares the Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital commitment to palliative care as a component of the overall healthcare for patients facing serious illness,” said Michael G. Ankin, MD, FACP, FCCP, vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer for Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. “Dr. Wood’s background as a medical educator and researcher, as well as his experience in palliative care and internal medicine, make him ideal to lead our efforts to enhance the health and quality of life of patients and to support their families.”

Dr. Wood comes from the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as assistant professor of medicine in the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics and fellowship director for the university’s fellowship in palliative medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He subsequently completed a palliative medicine fellowship at Northwestern University, where he also received a master’s degree in the science of clinical investigation. Dr. Wood is an active researcher and educator with interests in communication and symptom management.

“I am eager to lead this exciting partnership between Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital and Midwest Palliative CareCenter that coordinates efforts of physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains to create a tailored approach for each patient and their family,” said Dr. Wood. “Our goal is to enhance the quality of healthcare and also the quality of life for every patient we serve.”

Dr. Wood’s new position at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest brings him back to Lake County. He grew up in Libertyville and his family has come to Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital for their routine medical care since he was a child. Dr. Wood recently became a first-time parent and lives with his wife and daughter in Lake Bluff.
