Lake Forest Fire Department and Northwestern Medicine Preparing Emergency Response System for the BMW Championship
August 29, 2013
“We’re thrilled to host this world-class event in our community and are making preparations to ensure that anyone needing medical attention will receive it in a timely and appropriate way,” said Donald P. Schoenheider, Mayor of the City of Lake Forest. “The Lake Forest Fire Department is leading an effort that includes all of the fire departments in our EMS region and emergency physicians, nurses and support staff from Northwestern to ensure our guests have a safe and enjoyable time at the golf tournament.”
The Lake Forest Fire Department is coordinating the EMS operations on the golf course and will be supported by EMS personnel from the following fire departments: Libertyville, Countryside, Wauconda, Grayslake and Mundelein.
The medical trailer at the course will be staffed by a Northwestern Medicine medical team at all times who will treat minor medical emergencies that may occur among attendees. The Lake Forest Fire Department will have movable carts on the course staffed by paramedics that can quickly get to individuals needing medical attention who cannot get to the medical trailer. Also on the course will be carts carrying basic trauma supplies staffed by Fire Chiefs from throughout Lake County. In the event that someone needs to be transported to the hospital, there will be a fully stocked ALS Ambulance staffed with paramedics at the command post on the course at all times.
The medics on the course and the Northwestern Medicine team in the medical trailer will have medications for most common medical emergencies, cardiac issues or traumas that might occur on the course. Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest is also providing the supplies needed for the carts, medical trailer and ambulance.
“Preparation is key for an event of this size and duration, and so our emergency response system is a carefully coordinated effort among the fire departments in our region along with Lake Forest Hospital,” said Jeff Howell, Fire Chief for the City of Lake Forest. “There is always the possibility of medical emergencies or injuries on the course with the amount of spectators who will be in attendance at Conway Farms. Our job is to ensure that everyone is treated successfully and can enjoy their time at the tournament as much as possible.”
“Northwestern Medicine is proud to sponsor the medical tent for this world-class sports event. Our close and collaborative working relationship with the superb staff of the Lake Forest Fire Department will make this is a safe event for all participants and attendees,” said Thomas J. McAfee, President, Lake Forest Hospital, and Senior Vice President, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare.
