Northwestern Medicine Recognized as National Leader in Patient Safety

CHICAGO, IL – Northwestern Medicine has been recognized for patient safety with both Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital receiving an “A” Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group. The nonprofit group assigns scores to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals as part of its Hospital Safety Score initiative. Scores are based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections and are designed to give the public information that can they can use to protect themselves and their families. The “A” score places Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest among the nation’s safest hospitals.

The Leapfrog Group also recently recognized Northwestern Memorial’s website with an award for excellence in transparency. ”
The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. The Leapfrog Group’s eight-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel includes representatives from University of Michigan, Harvard University, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, University of California – Davis, Vanderbilt University and University of California – San Francisco.
