Northwestern Medicine's Cardiology and Heart Surgery 13th Among U.S. News' Best Hospitals

Northwestern Memorial Hospital July 15, 2014

Ranked first in Chicago and Illinois for 7th consecutive year

CHICAGO, IL – Northwestern Medicine’s cardiology and heart surgery program, the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, ranked as one of the top heart programs in the United States and the best heart center in Chicago and Illinois in the annual “Best Hospitals” report released July 15 by U.S. News & World Report.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute ranked first on the list of cardiology and heart programs in Chicago and Illinois. This year, U.S. News listed BCVI as the 13th  heart program nationally. U.S. News & World Report released the 2014-15 top hospitals rankings on Tuesday, July 15, 2014.

“Our goal is to provide our patients with the best heart care in the United States,” said Patrick M. McCarthy, MD, director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Northwestern Memorial’s chief of Cardiac Surgery and the Heller-Sacks Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, a milestone that renews our drive to be the nation’s top cardiovascular program. We are proud to again be recognized as one of the top heart centers in the country. We work tirelessly for our patients to earn this designation.”

Objective measures including patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties. Only about 3 percent of hospitals in the U.S. earned a national ranking in one or more specialties and only those ranking very highly in at least six specialties made the Honor Roll.

“This recognition reflects our commitment to patient care and serves to further galvanize our efforts to be among the very best in the nation,” said Clyde W. Yancy, MD, MSc, associate director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Northwestern Memorial’s Chief of Cardiology and Magerstadt Professor of Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “We are always working to provide the best patient care, as well as advance, through research and education, the fields of cardiology and cardiac surgery.”

The Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute treats cardiac and vascular patients at both Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. Northwestern Memorial was ranked 10th in the nation on the publisher’s most exclusive ranking: the Best Hospital’s 2014-15 Honor Roll. Northwestern Memorial is the only hospital in Illinois to make this prestigious ranking, and continues its placements as No. 1 in Illinois and the Chicago metro area, rankings the hospital has held since U.S. News introduced its state and local rankings two years ago. Northwestern Memorial is recognized in 14 of 16 specialties rated by U.S. News—five of which are top 10 placements.

Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital ranked No. 34 in Illinois and No. 29 in the Chicago metro rankings. These placements make it the highest rated hospital in Lake County to be recognized by U.S. News.
