Professional bicycle racing returns to the area this Saturday, July 19, at the Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium and Block Party

LAKE BLUFF, IL – The Criterium course is a closed course in downtown Lake Bluff that will first feature high-level amateur riders followed by professional men's and women's cycling teams with top pro riders from across the United States and the world.

"Northwestern Medicine supports and encourages cycling for advanced and professional racers like those in the Criterium and also as a family fitness activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and athletic ability," said Thomas J. McAfee, president of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. "Promoting healthy activities like cycling is a part of the Northwestern Medicine Patients First mission to create healthier communities."

This year the Lake Bluff Criterium course is 0.93 miles. In some races, the length of the race is determined by the number of laps, and in others it is by time. This year the women’s shortest race will be 30 minutes, and is an amateur race. Professional women will race 60 minutes; professional men will race 90 minutes.

The Criterium is combined with the Lake Bluff Block Party, produced by Friends of Lake Bluff Parks, to provide residents a great day of outdoor music, sport and fun. The Criterium races will run from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.; the Block Party will be 4:00 pm until 11:00 pm. Local restaurants will provide a Taste of Lake Bluff on the Green, while live music by local musicians is staged in the Gazebo during the Block Party.

"The residents of Lake Bluff have really embraced bike racing," said Marc Colbert, director of the Lake Bluff Criterium and Block Party. "Thanks to Northwestern Medicine's sponsorship we will have another great day of racing in the Village." Northwestern Medicine emergency physicians will also be staffing a medical station to provide medical assistance to racers and spectators. Learn more about the Lake Bluff Criterium and Block Party.
