Laparoscopic gallbladder removal rate

A cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. Laparoscopic surgery refers to a surgery done through small incisions with the help of a camera and other small surgical instruments. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is removal of the gallbladder using laparoscopic techniques. For some patients, a laparoscopic procedure is not possible because of prior surgeries or other factors.

Laparoscopic gallbladder removal often has fewer risks and complications than traditional surgery, so a higher rate of this type of procedure may indicate a hospital that provides a higher level of patient care.

About this measure

This measure tracks the number of cases of laparoscopic gallbladder removals out of every 100 adult gallbladder removals done in the hospital.

The source of data for NMH is Vizient.  The source of benchmark data is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

In this case, a higher number is better.
