Latrogenic pneumothorax lung injury due to medical care
A pneumothorax is a type of lung injury that allows air to leak into the area between the lungs and the chest wall, which causes mild to severe chest pain and shortness of breath. Iatrogenic means that is was caused by medical treatment, often as an incidental event during a procedure..
Most cases of iatrogenic pneumothorax are not serious and do not require any treatment. It is our goal to improve our patient outcomes and minimize the number of patients who experience iatrogenic pneumothorax
While some cases do not require any treatment, a pneumothorax can lead to serious complications. Because these events are relatively rare, a small number of cases can affect the rate substantially. A lower rate may indicate that a hospital provides a higher level of patient care.
About this measure
This measure tracks the number of iatrogenic pneumothorax cases out of every 1000 patients in the hospital, not including trauma patients.
Note: In this case, a lower number is better.
