Pneumonia is an infection in one or both lungs that causes them to fill up with fluid or pus. Pneumonia causes symptoms like coughing, fever, chills and trouble breathing.
Pneumonia is a leading cause of death in the United States. Treatment with the right antibiotics may reduce deaths from pneumonia. While some patients have higher risks than others, some of these complications may be preventable. A lower death rate may indicate that a hospital provides a higher level of patient care.
About this measure
Mortality rate is the statistical measure of the number of people who die. Pneumonia mortality rate tracks the number of percentage of patients who die in the hospital with pneumonia.
Note: In this case, a lower number is better.
