Blood transfusion reaction

Transfusions replace blood lost during surgery or a serious injury. A transfusion also may be provided if your body can't make blood properly because of an illness. Transfusion reaction is a problem that occurs after a patient receives blood and the immune system attacks the new blood cells or other components of the blood transfusion.

There are risks with any blood transfusion. One of the types of risks is blood incompatibility, which can cause serious reactions. Low rates of transfusion reaction may indicate that a hospital provides a higher level of patient care.

The source of data for NMH is Vizient.  The source of benchmark data is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

In this case, a lower number is better.
