Preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections in intensive care units (Leapfrog Group)

The descriptions for this measure come from source: www.leapfroggroup.org.

"If a patient is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he or she may require a urinary catheter. Patients with catheters are at risk for developing a dangerous infection in the urinary tract, known as a Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI). These infections can lead to other complications, increase recovery time, and can often lead to death."

About this measure

A hospital fully meets standards if the number of CAUTI infections that actually happened is less than or equal to the number of infections that were expected to happen at this hospital.

Scores are reported as:

1 = Willing to Report
2 = Some Progress
3 = Substantial Progress
4 = Fully Meets Standards

Note: In this case, a higher number is better.
