712, Leapfrog Group,

Preventing central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) in intensive care units (Leapfrog Group)

The descriptions for this measure come from source:

"If a patient is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he or she may be given a central line (a tube inserted into the body to deliver medication and other treatments). Patients with a central line are at high risk for developing a dangerous infection in the blood, known as a Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI). These serious infections can lead to other complications, increase recovery time, and can often lead to death."

About this measure

A hospital fully meets standards if the number of CLABSI infections that actually happened is less than or equal to the number of infections that were expected to happen at this hospital.

Scores are reported as:

1 = Willing to Report
2 = Some Progress
3 = Substantial Progress
4 = Fully Meets Standards

Note: In this case, a higher number is better.
