Percentage of patients in ED who left before they were seen by a healthcare provider (CMS)
Why is this measure important?
Patients who check into the emergency department for treatment sometimes decide to leave before they are seen by a healthcare provider.
Patients who leave the emergency department before they are seen by a healthcare provider may be seriously ill or injured. Leaving without treatment may increase the risk for negative health outcomes.
What does this measure show?
This measure shows the percentage (%) of patients who checked into the Emergency Department but left before they were seen by a healthcare provider.
For this measure, a lower percentage is better.
