Tobacco use: treatment provided or offered at discharge
Tobacco use is the single greatest cause of disease in the United States. There is strong evidence that tobacco dependence interventions may reduce the user’s risk of suffering from tobacco-related disease. Interventions include brief clinician advice, individual, group, or telephone counseling, and use of seven FDA-approved medications. These treatments are clinically effective and extremely cost-effective relative to other commonly used disease prevention interventions and medical treatments.
About this measure
This measure tracks the percent of patients who identified through the screening process as having used cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, pipe, and cigars in the past 30 days who were referred to evidence-based out-patient counseling and received or declined a prescription for cessation medication at discharge.
