Symptoms of Gastroparesis

Symptoms of gastroparesis may vary from one patient to the next, or may come and go in mild cases. Symptoms may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting (as often as every day)
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Difficulty managing blood sugar levels (in diabetics)

In some cases, delayed digestion can lead to these complications:

  • Excessive bacteria in the stomach
  • Bezoars, or solid masses of old food, that can cause vomiting, pain and blockages that prevent food from entering the intestine
  • Dehydration from frequent vomiting
