Nurse examining child's footIn general, sports medicine is about the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sports-related injuries and related medical conditions. The Lurie Children's at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital Pediatrics Program offers a specialized version of sports medicine care focused exclusively on the unique needs of children and teens.

The process begins with a pediatric sports medicine specialist evaluating your child’s injury or related medical condition. This evaluation includes a discussion with you and your child, taking into consideration every possible angle of your situation and sports-related goals. The focus then turns to any necessary sports-specific and age-appropriate treatment or education and, in some instances, rehabilitation to safely return your eager child to an active lifestyle.

Multidisciplinary team approach

The medical professionals on the pediatric sports medicine team are committed to delivering dedicated and compassionate care in an environment targeted to the needs of your child and family. When needed, the team taps into the expertise of other Lurie Children’s specialists to get your child back to sports activities safe and sound. This multidisciplinary team3 includes:

  • Lurie Children's specialists, board-certified in pediatrics and sports medicine
  • Lurie Children's orthopaedic surgeons
  • Registered nurses
  • Physical therapists
