Innovative Approaches to Research

Northwestern Medicine is dedicated to advancing knowledge of tracheobronchial disease and producing the next generation of thoracic surgeons skilled at managing airway conditions. As a research and teaching facility, Northwestern Memorial Hospital works to achieve that mission, constantly advancing the field of tracheal surgery and developing innovative treatments for highly complex and potentially fatal conditions that affect the trachea.

Recent innovative efforts include:

  • Development of a novel robotic technique for tracheobronchomalacia
  • Development of a total endoscopic treatment for tracheoesophageal fistulas
  • Novel surgical techniques, including tissue transfers for malignant tracheoesophageal fistulas
  • Development of novel techniques to repair damaged organs, including airway and lung, via immunomodulation
  • Use of a highly sophisticated technique to identify the gene (single-cell transcriptomics) and protein (single-cell proteomics and spatial proteomics) responsible for rare tracheal disorders such as idiopathic subglottal stenosis, a rare inflammatory disorder of unknown cause
  • Research into possible tracheal replacement involving regenerative medicine and stem cells
  • Development of bioprostheses and other implantable devices to solve complex problems of the airway and esophagus
