Genetic Testing for Neurological Conditions

Genetic testing, also called DNA testing, involves blood and tissue tests to determine your risk for certain genetic disorders, if you carry a gene for a disease or if you already have a disease. Genetic testing can also be used to determine the type of neurological disease a person has or to help catch certain conditions early, before they cause more serious symptoms.

Neurological conditions that may have a genetic component include:

  • Ataxia
  • Dystonia
  • Epilepsy
  • Essential tremor
  • Huntington's disease
  • Movement disorders
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Wilson disease
