In Season: Summer Produce

Get Your Fill of Summer Fruits and Vegetables

Summertime means warmer weather, vacations and an abundance of delicious produce. Just about anywhere you call home, there’s a variety of fruits and vegetables in season and in demand. When you buy produce that’s in season, you’re getting fruits and vegetables at their tastiest.

Farmers markets are in full bloom, displaying the most recently picked bushels of berries, vine-ripened tomatoes and vibrant summer squash. Buying locally grown produce saves you money and you get fruits and vegetables at their peak.

Neighborhood grocery stores are following suit with crates of ripe cherries and a forest of greens at your disposal. And, farmers have already begun shipping boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables grown nearby right to the public’s doorstep through community supported agriculture (CSA) programs. It’s not too late to purchase a CSA subscription or membership to receive a share of produce from a local farm.

With local produce flourishing from June through August, there’s little need for storing and shipping fruits and vegetables from out of town. If you’re interested in eating fresh and local, now’s the time to enjoy the best of both worlds.
