Nurses in Advance Practice Roles
Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital's Advance Practice Nurses (APNs) work with and support our bedside nurses to provide high quality and efficient patient care. With specializations in the areas of Acute Care, Critical Care, Long Term Care and Wound Care, the Clinical Nurse Specialists provide advance consultation and expertise for both patients and nurses.
APNs are not assigned to specific units, but rather facilitate the autonomy of primary care nurses through a focus on critical thinking skills, collaboration among disciplines and incorporating evidence-based decision-making into clinical practice.
Their work promotes optimal patient outcomes and varies by department, and typically includes:
- Bedside consultation for direct patient care
- Patient and community education
- Professional staff development through the education and mentoring
In the Breast Care Center as Nurse Navigators, APNs' primary role is to provide individualized care to breast cancer patients from diagnosis through treatment. They also provide community and staff education in the areas of care of the oncology patient and breast health. In the Emergency Department, APNs provide direct patient care, patient referral and staff education opportunities.
