Dean M. Harrison

President and Chief Executive Officer, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare

Dean M. Harrison is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (NMHC), the primary teaching affiliate of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Parent Corporation to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Since arriving from the University of Chicago Health System in 1998, where he served as President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Harrison has been instrumental to the creation and success of Northwestern Medicine, a strategic partnership between the medical school and health system to become one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers. Under his leadership, Mr. Harrison has guided the health system to become a nationally recognized leader in patient safety and quality while increasing patient access across Chicago. Northwestern Memorial HealthCare comprises 4 hospitals, 60 ambulatory and diagnostic sites and over 3,500 physicians. 

Mr. Harrison is involved in numerous community and professional organizations including serving as the Chair-elect of the Illinois Hospital Association, Chair of the Business Leadership Group for Workforce Chicago 2.0, and 2013-2015 Community Impact Chair for the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago. Mr. Harrison is a member of the boards of directors of the Center for Medical Interoperability, Member Board of Directors of the University HealthSystem, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Executives’ Club of Chicago, Ikaria Inc., United Way of Metropolitan Chicago and World Business Chicago. He is a special advisor to Merrick Ventures and is a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, and the Institute of Medicine of Chicago.

Mr. Harrison has been honored by B’nai B’rith International with the National Healthcare Award in 2008, the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency, and by the Chicago Minority Enterprise Development Council with the 2010 CEO Leadership Circle of Excellence Award for Diversity.

Mr. Harrison earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana University and a Master of Business Administration from St. Francis College.

Peter J. McCanna

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare

Peter J. McCanna is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (NMHC).
Mr. McCanna previously served as NMHC Executive Vice President Administration and CFO. Mr. McCanna joined NMHC in 2002 as Senior Vice President, CFO and Treasurer. Prior to joining NMHC, he was the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Presbyterian Healthcare Services (PHS) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Prior to PHS, he was the Senior Vice President and CFO of the University of Colorado Hospital. Earlier in his career, Mr. McCanna worked for Denver Health and as a health care consultant for The Lewin Group.
Mr. McCanna serves on the Catholic Extension Society Board of Governors. He is a member of the Health Management Academy and The Economic Club of Chicago. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Michigan, and his Master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
