The Baby Blues - Postpartum Depression (Prentice)

The time after birth may be an emotional one. You may feel "down" or "moody," or you may find yourself crying and saying, "I'm so happy." These feelings are due to changes in your hormones and are very normal. It may help to talk about these feelings with your family and friends or to find a babysitter to watch the baby so you can get out for short periods of time. Try not to get too tired. Eat well-balanced meals, make time to relax and do something you enjoy. If the "baby blues" last longer than two to four weeks, a more severe depression is possible. Notify your doctor or nurse midwife if you:

  • Cannot sleep, even when the baby sleeps
  • Lose your appetite
  • Cannot care for yourself and your baby
  • Feel depressed or anxious for several days
  • Feel you are losing control
  • Have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby
