Leapfrog awards high letter grades to all four hospitals in the Chicago-area health system

CHICAGO, IL– Northwestern Medicine’s four hospitals all received high letter grades in the 2014 fall Hospital Safety Scores from the Leapfrog Group. The nonprofit group assigns scores to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals as part of its Hospital Safety Score initiative, which aims to provide patients and their families with an easy way to make informed decisions about where they choose to receive health care. Utilizing publicly reported measures designed to track and reduce preventable injuries, medical errors, accidents and infections, the Leapfrog Group’s scoring system assigns hospitals with an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” letter grade based on their individual performance.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, Ill., and Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Ill., were recognized with “A” grades and Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Ill., received a “B” grade in the 2014 fall scores.

“We are proud to be able say that each one of our health system’s hospitals received praise from Leapfrog for their individual quality and safety performance,” said James Adams, MD, chief medical officer for Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, the corporate parent of the Northwestern Medicine Health System. “Central DuPage Hospital and Delnor Hospital may have only recently joined our Northwestern Medicine family of health care providers, but the shared commitment to providing the highest quality of care for the patients and families we serve is well reflected in the letter grades that were awarded. It is my belief that as a united health system, Northwestern Medicine’s continued focus on creating the safest, highest quality healthcare environments possible, for both patients and providers, is stronger than it has ever been.”

The Hospital Safety Scores are compiled under the guidance of the Leapfrog Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, which is comprised of some of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety. The Hospital Safety Score uses a total of 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to evaluate the performance for all eligible hospitals in the U.S. The Leapfrog Group’s eight-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel includes representatives from University of Michigan, Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University.

Northwestern Medicine has a strong commitment to providing a culture of quality, safety and service. By aspiring to the highest standards for quality and patient satisfaction with collaborative focus on process improvement, all four hospitals in the system are committed to delivering care that is safe and without error.
