Radiation Oncologist Joins Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital
Lake Forest Hospital January 06, 2014
LAKE FOREST, IL – Radiation oncologist Joy Coleman, MD, has joined the Department of Radiation Oncology at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital as a member of Northwestern Medicine’s Regional Medical Practice. Coleman treats patients at the Northwestern Lake Forest and Northwestern Grayslake cancer centers. Coleman’s expertise is in using new and highly-precise radiation techniques that maximize the impact of therapy while minimizing the effects radiation can have on healthy tissues and organs. She uses image guided radiation therapy to target precisely where the tumor is and to pinpoint its location. Using intensity modulated radiation therapy, she is then able to determine the correct radiation doses of radiation and sculpt the dose to conform to the unique shape of the tumor.
Her expertise also includes recent developments in stereotactic radiosurgery including Cyberknife Robotic Radiosurgery, Gamma Knife Radiosurgery and Linear Accelerator Based Radiosurgery—all of which are non-invasive alternatives to surgery that deliver beams of high dose radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy. She is excited about helping grow the Linear Accelerator-based Radiosurgery program at Northwestern Lake Forest.
“Dr. Coleman is highly skilled at using leading-edge radiation technology to target cancerous cells while minimizing the impact to healthy cells, creating better overall outcomes for patients,” said Michael G. Ankin, MD, FACP, FCCP, a pulmonologist at Northwestern Lake Forest and the hospital’s vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer.
Coleman joins Northwestern Lake Forest from Advocate Condell Medical Center where she served as the medical director of radiation oncology. She received her undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis and her medical degree from the University of Michigan. She completed her residency at the University of California, San Francisco where she served as chief resident. She is board certified in radiation oncology.
Coleman’s research has been published in medical journals such as the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics and the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
“Radiation oncology is constantly evolving, and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital utilizes the latest technology and techniques available to remove cancer from the body,” said Coleman. “I’m excited to work alongside Marc Posner, MD to utilize these highly precise radiology techniques to create better cancer treatments for our patients.”
