Why Focus on Primary Care

In the United States, 35% of all patient medical visits are with a primary care clinician. The U.S. is facing a projected shortage of approximately 70,000 primary care physicians by 2038.1 Adding just one primary care physician per 10,000 people results in a mortality reduction in that population of 5.3%.2

Northwestern Medicine serves a rapidly aging population with growing needs for more preventive and complex care. We understand that primary care is the foundation of health. That’s why we are committed to advancing this critical aspect of medicine for the patients who trust us with their care.

About Dr. Havey

The institute was established through an anonymous gift made in honor of Primary Care Physician Robert Havey, MD, vice president, Operations, Northwestern Medical Group, and clinical professor of Medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Dr. Havey has spent his decades-long career as a physician at Northwestern Medicine. As a primary care physician, he walks alongside his patients on their health journeys, being their biggest advocate and a trusted source of expert care, information and support.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Havey is also passionate about teaching the next generation of primary care physicians at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, his alma mater.
