Bronchitis Treatments

Acute bronchitis usually clears up on its own. There is no cure for chronic bronchitis, but treatment can relieve the symptoms.

Acute bronchitis treatments will keep you more comfortable while you are sick. Treatments may include

  • Avoiding smoke and allergens
  • Getting plenty of sleep
  • Taking antibiotics if the infection is bacterial
  • Taking decongestants and expectorants if recommended by your physician
  • Using a humidifier
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Sleeping propped up with pillows

Chronic bronchitis treatments are geared at providing some relief and making breathing easier. Treatments may include:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Using a humidifier
  • Avoiding secondhand smoke and chemical exposure
  • Expectorants to thin mucus secretions
  • Inhaled medications, including bronchodilators and corticosteroids
  • Supplemental oxygen
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Lung reduction surgery
  • Lung transplant surgery, in rare cases
