The BalanceTutor

The Meditouch BalanceTutor™ can help you improve your balance and walking. It is a treadmill on a platform that can move forward, backward and in other directions to mimic a slip or trip.

Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital is the first facility in Chicagoland to offer this form of training. In addition, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital is the 10th facility in the U.S. to offer it for outpatient therapy and only the second to offer it for inpatient therapy.

How does the BalanceTutor work?

You will wear a safety harness while you use this device. The BalanceTutor mimics changes in balance, allowing you to practice the type of walking that your therapist chooses.

The BalanceTutor offers a variety of virtual reality (VR) scenes to help you with balance and gait training. The VR part creates an environment that mimics real situations.

What are the benefits of using the BalanceTutor?

The BalanceTutor can treat many different patients. It can help older adults prevent falling, and it can help patients with neurological, orthopaedic and vestibular diagnoses. In traditional therapy, practicing your balance and gait can come with safety issues. However, with the BalanceTutor, you can practice these skills more safely.
