External-Beam Radiation Therapy
EBRT delivers precise doses of radiation from a machine outside the body to target cancer cells. Techniques include:
- 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT): Shapes radiation beams to the tumor’s three-dimensional outline to reduce dose to surrounding tissue.
- Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): Varies the intensity of each beam, enabling more conformal coverage of irregularly shaped tumors.
- Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT): Delivers IMRT as the machine rotates around the patient, often shortening treatment times.
- TomoTherapy®: A form of IMRT that integrates daily CT imaging for precise targeting.
Next step: Schedule a consultation with a Northwestern Medicine radiation oncologist to review whether this approach fits your diagnosis and preferences.
