Quick Dose: What Should I Do if I Get the Flu?

The most important thing to do is to stay home. A day or two of rest is one of the best ways to get over the flu. You also prevent from spreading it further. Here are some other preventative tips to help you through the flu season:

  • Get a flu shot, which will help keep you from developing the flu if you are exposed to it
  • Cough into your elbow rather than your hands to avoid spreading bacteria and viruses through touch
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your fingers and hands
  • Frequently clean and disinfect surfaces at home, work or school
  • Skip excessive alcohol, which interferes with the quality of your REM sleep, the most restorative part of your sleep cycle
  • Eat healthy, nutritious food to keep your immune system strong
