Not sure which doctor you’re looking for?
Breastfeeding classes before your baby is born and lactation specialists and consultants during your hospital stay will provide breastfeeding education and support for you and your baby. Once you leave the hospital and are home with your baby, you may need more breastfeeding support. That is when you can turn to the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Breastfeeding Center, located on the first floor of Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, for support over the phone or to schedule a free lactation consultation.
One-on-one breastfeeding consultations with a lactation consultant provide counsel and education to breastfeeding mothers and babies. Appointments may include taking a history, observing a breastfeeding session, as well as education and a follow-up plan. This service is by appointment only so that we may serve you better. Appointments at Kish Hospital are available Monday through Friday, 12:30 - 4:30 pm, call 815.748.8350. Valley West Hospital consultations are available on Wednesdays, call 815.786.3760.
Kish Hospital’s Mom's Breastfeeding Support Group meets at the hospital on the second and fourth Thursday from 10 - 11 am. Mothers and babies are welcome to attend this breastfeeding group to discuss the joys and challenges of breastfeeding. Drop in with your baby to meet other breastfeeding moms and receive the support and encouragement you need. Facilitated by a certified lactation consultant, this group is meant to provide support and assist with any issues you and baby may be experiencing with feeding.
The Breastfeeding Center at Kishwaukee Hospital is pleased to announce the opening of a human milk depot with the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes. One of the first four Illinois locations, the Milk Depot at the Breastfeeding Center is a place where pre-approved mothers can drop-off their extra breast milk to help save the lives of premature and sick babies whose mothers cannot produce enough milk of their own.
To donate breast milk, mothers need to go through a screening process with the milk bank. The process begins by calling 847.262.5134 and talking to the donor outreach team at Mothers' Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes. Once a donor number is received, mothers can call the Breastfeeding Center at Kishwaukee Hospital at 815.748.8350 to arrange a drop off time.
