Ben Gordon Center The Living Room

An acute crisis respite program for adults, The Living Room* is a safe, comfortable, non-clinical space for individuals experiencing overwhelming symptoms due to life circumstances and is offered as an alternative to our local hospital emergency rooms. The Living Room is housed within the Ben Gordon Center.

This is a free program for any adult, age 18 and older. The goal of the program is to provide a calm and safe environment in which guests can resolve crises without more intensive intervention.

What to Expect

Every individual who comes to The Living Room will be greeted by one of our peer recovery support specialists; this group of specialized staff have lived experience with mental illness and/or substance abuse and are ready to provide crisis intervention, support, and linkage to community resources, as well as make appropriate referrals when the individual’s crisis cannot be resolved by The Living Room staff.

Any individual 18 years of age and older, who is a DeKalb County resident, may utilize these services free of cost and without being a registered client.

The Living Room offers:

  • Crisis intervention
  • Safety planning
  • A safe non-judgmental space
  • Support from trained peer counselors (certified recovery support specialists), licensed clinicians, case managers, and registered nurses
  • Assistance with problem solving
  • Linkage with referrals for emergency housing, healthcare, and food
  • Healthy refreshments
  • Follow-up services

These services are provided on a walk-in basis. For hours, please visit the Northwestern Medicine Ben Gordon Center location page.
