Genetic Counseling

Genetic Counseling

A typical cancer genetic counseling appointment covers the following:

  • Collection of a three-generation family history of cancer
  • A review of the categories of cancer: sporadic, familial and hereditary
  • A risk assessment based on family history
    • An assessment of the likelihood that the history may be explained by an underlying genetic etiology
    • Whether genetic testing is indicated based on this history
    • A discussion of hereditary syndromes
  • Specifics of genetic testing
    • How testing is conducted
    • Possible test results
    • Types of testing available
  • Benefits and limitations of genetic testing
  • Support for decision-making regarding genetic testing
  • Coordination of genetic testing, if appropriate

You are encouraged to collect as much cancer family history as possible prior to your appointment. If you are adopted or otherwise have limited family history, genetic testing may still be recommended.
