Treatments and Locations

  • Antiplatelet and anticoagulation medication are blood-thinning drugs meant to reduce blood clotting.
  • Carotid endarterectomy. This surgery removes the plaque buildup in the carotid artery and may reduce your risk of ischemic stroke. A carotid endarterectomy also involves risks, especially for people with heart disease or other medical conditions.
  • Carotid stenting. A surgeon or neurointerventionalist threads a catheter to your carotid arteries through an artery in your groin, wrist, or neck. A balloon is then inflated to expand the narrowed artery. A stent is then inserted to support the opened artery.
