Prescription Drug Treatments for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Finding the right treatment can be challenging for people with trigeminal neuralgia. Certain prescription medications can help reduce the pain of trigeminal neuralgia and the rate of attacks. These include:

  • Antiepileptic drugs (carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, gabapentin, phenytoin)
  • Migraine drugs (sumatriptan)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, nortriptyline)
  • Baclofen

When trigeminal neuralgia symptoms do not respond enough to traditional medical therapy, surgery may help.
