Awake Kidney Transplant
Our expert teams constantly work to improve health care and your patient experience. When it comes to organ transplants, that means using an innovative approach for kidney transplants.
Awake Kidney Transplant
Typically, doctors perform kidney transplants under general anesthesia. This means the patient is asleep during the transplant surgery. During the awake kidney transplant, Northwestern Medicine doctors use a spinal anesthesia shot.
This shot is like what care teams use during a cesarean section (C-section) for childbirth. Your team will inject a local anesthetic into your spinal fluid. That injection will numb the lower half of your body. This allows you to stay awake.
Your anesthesiology team will also offer medication to help you relax during the surgery.
Benefits of an Awake Kidney Transplant
- Better transplant access for people at high risk of health issues with general anesthesia
- Shorter hospital stays (1 day instead of 2 to 5 days with general anesthesia) so you can recover more comfortably at home
- Fewer risks, such as those related to your lungs and heart, associated with spinal anesthesia compared to general anesthesia
- Beneficial for people who are worried or nervous about general anesthesia
The Risks of an Awake Kidney Transplant
There may be risks depending on your health. Discuss any concerns with your care team before surgery. We are here to make sure you understand and feel confident in your care.
Side effects from receiving anesthesia in your spine may include:
- Low blood pressure
- Headaches
- Back aches at the injection site
- Difficulty peeing
- Nausea or vomiting
We will closely monitor you to help prevent or lessen complications.
Who Qualifies for an Awake Kidney Transplant?
Your care team will evaluate your health to see if you are eligible. They can discuss all your options for kidney transplant with you.
Awake kidney transplants can work if you have a higher risk for health complications with general anesthesia. Typically, these groups of people have a higher risk:
- Older adults
- People with severe obesity
- People with underlying conditions like heart disease, lung disease and diabetes
- People who are anxious about general anesthesia
