What Sets Us Apart

When it comes to transplants, experience matters. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is in the top 10 in the U.S. for living-donor liver transplant volume. We have performed more than 2,700 liver transplants. In 2024, we performed 138 liver transplants, including 17 that involved living donors, per the United Network for Organ Sharing, 2023 to 2024.

Northwestern Medicine Organ Transplant Center’s one-year survival rate after liver transplant exceeds the national average, according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.

Transplants require lifelong care, which can affect your everyday life. We have the most patients in the world off immunosuppressants (antirejection medication), which means they can enjoy a better quality of life after transplant.

In addition to being the largest liver transplant program in Illinois, we are the second-largest NIH-funded transplant program in the U.S. and have more than 90 active clinical trials. Research funding helps our experts improve liver transplant care for you and for patients around the world.

Finding a Match

Matching with a liver donor is a vital part of the transplant process. Many organ transplants come from a deceased organ donor, but living organ donation can result in better outcomes and help people get transplants faster. That’s why we have one of the largest living donor programs in the country.

Transplant Village is a community of organ recipients, donors and family members who have been affected by the Organ Transplant Center. They provide resources and support, including the Donor Champion Program. These resources help people on the transplant waitlist learn ways to find a living donor.
