Kyphosis is a type of spinal deformity that's characterized by a curvature of the spine that causes a rounding of the back, creating a hunched or slouching posture. A normal spine can bend up to 45 degrees, but kyphosis is diagnosed when the curvature reaches 50 degrees or more, as measured on an X-ray.
A form of kyphosis that affects adolescents is known as Scheuermann’s disease, and is caused by several bones of the spine (vertebrae) wedging together.
